The importance of the church in the life of the Negro justifies the publication of this brief account of the development of the institution. For many years the various denominations have been writing treatises bearing on their own particular work, but hitherto there has been no effort to study the achievements of all of these groups as parts of the same institution and to show the evolution of it from the earliest period to the present time. This is the objective of this volume.
Whether or not the author has done this task well is a question which the public must decide. This work does not represent what he desired to make it. Many facts of the past could not be obtained for the reason that several denominations have failed to keep records and facts known to persons now active in the church could not be collected because of indifference or the failure to understand the motives of the author. Not a few church officers and ministers, however, gladly coöperated with the author in giving and seeking information concerning their denominations. Among these were Mr. Charles H. Wesley, Prof. J. A. Booker, and Dr. Walter H. Brooks. For their valuable assistance the author feels deeply grateful.
Carter G. Woodson.

The History of the Negro Church Carter Godwin Woodson 9781680921922 Books Reviews
- This book is a rich and thorough accounting of the early black church, beginning even before the Revolutionary War days. There is so much in this book that probably has been unknown to the average reader and perhaps even to the average church historian.
We have heard so much about 1100 on Sunday morning being the most segregated hour of the week, but the material in this book will demonstrate why it was important for the black churches to develop separate from the white churches which would "rule" them.
The author had some shocking things to say about American religious and political life in the 1920s and about Woodrow Wilson in particular, but I had to remind myself that the book was written in 1921. We need to hear his comments! Carter Woodson has made a major contribution to the history of religion and the history of a people as well. - This book was originally published in 1912 and is historical, so the writing style is pretty drab. This book, however, chronicles a very important history. The origins of separate black and white churches is something that Christians decry as a failure to live up to God’s standards for humanity. If one believes this separation should be remedied, it’s important to understand how it originated.
- First half of the book "Hisotory of the Negro Church" is great - second half a;; about individual leaders of little value
- Dr. Woodson is one of the greatest historians America ignores. His straight, forward, truthful style is refreshing. He uses history to define the strengths and failings of the Church and then unveils the consequences/effects of them on the people. whether they be new converts or seasoned believers. he offers sound (and blunt) advice of how the Black community can thrive with the help of God, and the respect of men.
- I like the informative and in-depth information.
- an excellent book.
- Learned a lot reading this book.
- Exceeded expectations.
